Cyprus-based EMBIO Diagnostics has emerged as a trailblazer in the global indoor air quality industry, driven by innovation and strategic collaborations with the Enterprise Europe Network.

In the aftermath of the post-pandemic era, public health has emerged as a paramount concern worldwide. At the forefront of this pivotal period stands EMBIO Diagnostics.

Founded in Cyprus by a team of scientists in 2016, EMBIO Diagnostics initially aimed to revolutionise food safety. Today, they are a pioneering force in high-tech diagnostic devices using AI and machine learning.

Central to their innovation is the B.EL.D™ (Biosensor-based electronic luminescent device), a patented technology that anchors their flagship product line alongside the airbeld™ system, which provides real-time insights into indoor air pollutants.

“Our vision for EMBIO’s future is to become a global leader in the field of advanced diagnostics, transforming the way industries approach safety, health, and environmental monitoring,” explained the company’s founder and CEO, Constantinos Loizou.

“The next steps include scaling up production to meet growing demand, expanding our presence in international markets, and forming strategic partnerships to drive further innovation,” he added. “Ultimately, we aspire to make our diagnostic tools an essential part of everyday practices in various sectors, contributing to a safer and healthier world.”

Strategic partnerships

Part of EMBIO Diagnostic’s achievement in scaling up advanced technology and achieving commercial success is attributed to the pivotal role played by Enterprise Europe Network, Cyprus.

“They facilitated access to funding opportunities and commercial collaborations,” said Loizou. “Through collaborative events, they helped us build connections with key stakeholders, significantly expanding our market reach.”

The Cypriot Enterprise Europe Network is extensive, and its expertise provides crucial support, including market intelligence, partner search services, and advice on accessing EU funding programmes. The Network helped EMBIO Diagnostics identify new R&D opportunities, connect with potential partners across Europe, and enhance its overall business strategy for market entry through matchmaking event participation.

Expanding production, enhancing visibility

Stalo Demosthenous, the Network coordinator at the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), recalled the time when EMBIO Diagnostics approached them in September 2023. They contacted my office to ask about the Match4Health hybrid Enterprise Europe Network event in Larissa, Greece. The event aimed to showcase advancements in healthcare technology.

“In February 2024, the company sought additional support from us for a device still in development. They needed a partner with expertise in AI prediction models for indoor air quality (IAQ), aiming to secure funding through a European programme. Concurrently, they aimed to promote their advanced air quality detection device in local and international markets,” she explained.

Successful cooperation with the Network

The Enterprise Europe Network of Cyprus initially established a research profile in their ‘database of partnering opportunities’ to find a European research partner for a proposal under the EUROSTAR call.

To support the launch of its innovative product, the airbeld™ (IAQ) monitoring system, the CCCI, acting as coordinator for the Network in Cyprus, organised a dedicated event focused on health and safety in February 2024. Over 100 individuals took part, giving EMBIO Diagnostics the opportunity to raise awareness, network, and attract potential partners and clients interested in the device.

Later that year, in April, a similar event was held in Athens, Greece, with 25 participants. This event was organised by CCCI in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Athens, PRAXI Network, and MIRTEC (both Network members), aiming to assist the company in its expansion efforts into Greece.

These actions collectively enhanced the company’s prospects by improving its research capabilities, increasing market visibility, expanding networking opportunities, and facilitating growth. As a result, there was heightened demand, a stronger sales infrastructure, and a position of market dominance.

The increased market for the airbeld™ system, driven by successful presentations and greater visibility, has increased sales revenue for EMBIO Diagnostics. Consequently, the company has expanded its team to include a dedicated sales department.

This expansion not only supports the company’s growing operations but also contributes to job creation within the industry.

With support from the Network in Cyprus, EMBIO Diagnostics has bolstered its market presence by strategically enhancing product visibility and entering new markets, including Greece.

Successful events and collaborations have reinforced the company’s reputation, resulting in a larger local market share. These developments have positioned the company as a leader in the IAQ monitoring industry, fostering sustainable growth and success.
